with the 707 aging boeing decided to produce a mid-size plane to fit in between the 727/737/757 and the 747. the 767 was introduced in the early 1980s. it is a widebody twinjet airliner capable of carrying between 181 and 245 passengers in a standard three-class configuration depending on the variant and has a range of 5 200 to 6 950 nautical miles. the 767 has an economy class seat-to-aisle ratio of 3.5 seats per aisle making for quicker food service and quicker exit of the plane than many other jetliners which normally have 4-6 seats per aisle. the 767 sold very well from the late 1980s to the late 1990s with a decrease during the recession in the early 1990s. after strong sales in 1997 sales have declined significantly due to the economic recession of the early 2000s increased competition from airbus and the recent emergence of a direct replacement program the boeing 787. in february 1982 boeing announced that it was developing a stretched version of the 767-200. the resulting 767-300 is a medium to long range widebody airliner with the flightdeck and systems carried over directly from the 767-200. it features a 6.42 m stretch consisting of fuselage plugs forward and behind the wing centre section. other changes were minor. the 767-300 had its maiden flight on january 30 1986 and was awarded certification and entered service in september of the same year. delta air lines has an all-boeing fleet. it was one of the last major airlines to operate the original boeing 737-200 models until the last aircraft retired in 2006. delta has the largest fleet of 757 and 767 aircraft of any airline. it is currently the world s largest 767 operator with approximately 102 planes. their hub at hartsfield-jackson atlanta international airport has the highest number of 767 operations in the world.
the grumman j2f duck was an american single-engine amphibious biplane. the g-15 was an improved version of the earlier jf duck differing by having a longer float.[1] it was ordered by the united states navy as the j2f duck. the j2f-1 duck first flew on 2 april 1936 powered by a 750hp (559kw) wright r-1820 cyclone and was delivered to the us navy on the same day. the j2f-2 had a wright cyclone engine but boosted to 790hp (589kw). twenty j2f-3 variants were built in 1939 for use as executive transports for the navy with plush interiors. pressure of work following the united states entry into the war in 1941 production of the j2f duck was transferred to the columbia aircraft corporation of new york. they produced 330 aircraft for the navy and us coast guard. a surplus navy duck was converted for use by the united states air force in the air/sea rescue role as the oa-12 in 1942. the j2f was an equal-span single-bay biplane with a large monocoque central float which also housed the retractable main landing gear. it had strut-mounted stabiliser floats beneath each lower wing. a crew of two or three were carried in tandem cockpits forward for the pilot and rear for an observer with room for a radio operator if required. it had a cabin in the fuselage for two passengers or a stretcher. the duck s main pontoon was blended into the fuselage making it almost a flying boat despite its similarity to a conventional landplane which has been float-equipped. this configuration was shared with the earlier loening ol grumman having acquired the rights to loening s hull float and undercarriage designs.[2] like the f4f wildcat its narrow-tracked landing gear was hand-cranked.
uss nautilus ssn-571 is the world s first nuclear-powered submarine and was the first vessel to complete a submerged transit across the north pole. its propulsion system was a landmark in the history of naval engineering and submersible craft. during nautilus long career it has established many historic firsts. on may 10 nautilus headed for a shakedown and its longest submerged cruise was when it traveled 2 100 km from new london to san juan puerto rico. from 1955 to 1957 nautilus continued to be used to investigate the effects of submerged speeds and endurance. on february 4 1957 nautilus logged its 60 000th nautical mile (111 120 km). in may nautilus departed for the pacific coast to participate in coastal exercises and the fleet exercise operation "home run " which acquainted units of the pacific fleet with the capabilities of nuclear submarines. on july 21 nautilus returned to new london connecticut and departed on august 19 for its first voyage of 2 226 km (1 202 nmi) under polar pack ice. in early 1959 nautilus completed its first overhaul on may 1959 - august 1960. on october 24 nautilus departed new london for its first deployment with the sixth fleet in the mediterranean sea and returned to its home-port on december 16. on may 2 1966 nautilus returned to its home-port to resume operations with the atlantic fleet and log its 300 000th mile underway. in the next year nautilus conducted special operations for comsublant and then on august 1967 it returned to portsmouth and conducted exercises off the southeastern seaboard. on december 1968 nautilus returned to new london. in 1979 nautilus set out from groton connecticut for its final voyage reaching mare island naval shipyard of vallejo california on may 26 1979. on march 3 1980 nautilus was decommissioned and stricken from the naval vessel register.
the fokker d. vii is a world war i fighter aircraft manufactured by fokker-flugzeugwerke. in late 1917 fokker built experimental v.11 biplane. fokker had submitted the v.11 along with several other prototypes. in may 1918 the d.vii entered squadron service with jasta 10 and the type quickly proved to have many important advantages over the albatros and pfalz scouts and could dive without any fear of structural failure. production d.vii aircraft initially used the 180 hp mercedes d. iiia followed by the high-compression 200 hp mercedes d.iiia. the first d.vii with the new bmw engine first entered service with jasta 11 in late june 1918 though production of the bmw engine was very limited and it was continued to be produced with the 180 hp mercedes d. iiia until the end of the war. after world war i other countries used the d.vii operationally and it served in the polish dutch swiss and belgian air forces. the d.vii has proven to be popular that fokker sold large number of d.vii airframes that he had smuggled into the netherlands after the armistice. by 1929 the alfred comte company manufactured eight new d.vii fighters under license for the swiss fliegertruppe. d.vii was preserved and other allied countries acquired the aircraft. in 1918 one war prize was captured when it was accidentally landed at a small american airstrip near verdun france. in 1920 the aircraft was donated to the smithsonian institution by the war department and is currently on display at the national air and space museum in washington d.c. two other american war prizes were retained by private owners until sold abroad in 1971 and 1981 and is currently on display at the canada aviation museum in ottawa ontario canada and the militaire luchtvaart museum in soesterberg the netherlands. the latter aircraft is painted in fictitious royal netherlands air force markings. only one d.vii survived used by the dutch military and in 1948 it was discovered in a german barn. d.vii is currently displayed at the deutsches museum in munich germany. d.vii was also acquired by canada and france.

the space shuttle orbiter is the orbital vehicle of the space shuttle and is a mixture of rocket spacecraft and aircraft. it is a reusable winged "spaceplane" and it launches crew and payload into earth orbit and performs on-orbit operations. individual orbiters are both named and numbered a similar manner to ships by the nasa orbiter vehicle designation system. all orbiters external structures are very similar though they have minor differences such as new equipment fitted on a rotating basis for maintenance and the newer orbiters tend to be structurally lighter. the first test shuttle the enterprise was designed for testing the space shuttle behavior in atmospheric flight. columbia first launched on april 12 1981 and the first space shuttle to fly into orbit. challenger first launched on april 4 1983 and the second orbiter to become operational at kennedy space center in florida. discovery first launched on august 30 1984 has flown 33 missions and is still currently operational though discovery will be retiring in 2010. atlantis first launched on october 3 1985 has flown 26 missions and is still operational today but will be retiring also in 2010. and the endeavor first launched on may 7 1992 and has flown 19 missions and still operational but is due to retire also in 2010. the orbiter s crew cabin has a flight deck mid-deck and utility area. the orbiter has a large payload bay at about 60 by 15 feet. there are three space shuttle main engines (ssmes) mounted on the orbiter s aft fuselage in a triangular pattern. the aft fuselage houses three auxiliary power units. the orbiter structure is primarily made from aluminum alloy although the engine thrust structure is made from titanium alloy. space shuttle orbiters support scientific experiments and observations spacecraft deployment retrieval service and repair assembly of large space structures such as the international space station and other various space operations.
the beechcraft bonanza is an american general aviation aircraft introduced in 1947 by the beech aircraft corporation. as of 2008 it is still being produced in derivative form by hawker beechcraft becoming the longest-running production airplane in history. more than 17 000 bonanzas of all variants have been built
the v-2 rocket was the first ballistic missile and the first man-made object to achieve sub-orbital spaceflight. the first v-2 rocket to reach operational status was batterie 444 and on september 2 1944 they formed up to launch attacks on paris and eventually set up in houffalize in belgium. there were hundreds of v-2s launched that blew up in mid-flight and never made it into allied statistics. on march 27 1945 the last british civilian killed was mrs. ivy millichamp 34 in her home in elm grove orpington and an estimated 2 754 were killed in london by v-2 attacks with another 6 523 injured which is just two people killed per v-2 rocket. the v-2 despite being one of the most advanced weapons in wwii it was militarily ineffective as it lacks a proximity fuse so it couldn t be set for air burst. the v-2s undeniable value despite its over-all ineffectiveness was in its novelty as a weapon which set the stage for the next 50 years of ballistic military rocketry culminating with icbms during the cold war. at the end of world war ii many v-2 rockets were retrieved by the united states and the ussr there were three hundred trainloads of v-2s and parts were captured and shipped to the united states and 126 principal designers both wermher von braun and walter dornberger were in american hands. in october 1945 during operation backfire a small number of v-2 missiles were assembled by the british and launched three of them from a site in northern germany. operation paperclip recruited german engineers to the us and special mission v-2 transported v-2 parts to white sands proving grounds. the ussr also captured a number of v-2s and staff. after the war v-2s launched in secret may have been responsible for ghost rockets wherein unexplained objects crossed the skies over sweden and finland. a competitor for the ansari x prize the canadian arrow is based on the v-2.
the p-51d mustang old crow was an american fighter aircraft which was most widely produced by mustang. the p-51d was equipped with a larger canopy and an aero products propeller to replace the hamilton standard propeller. the old crow arrived in europe in mid 1944 and quickly became the primary usaaf fighter in the theater. in the same year 1944 captain clarence anderson returned to the 375th fighter group for a second combat tour. he was assigned a new p-51d old crow in the dark green mask. captain bud was on a mission when the first drop of snow in germany fell. thus he noted a mixed flight of dark green and silver aluminum mustangs below him. after his mission he told his ground crew that the one painted the dark green stood out against the snow background and silver ones appeared to the have the best camouflage. because of that bud suggested to paint the old crow silver color the next time it was down for heavy maintenance. the next morning captain bud arrived at the station to find his p-51d old crow to use for his mission. to his surprise he found the old crow in a gleaming aluminum paint scheme ready for flight. three members of his crew worked on it through the night scrapping rubbing and remarking. they were all tired and their hands were raw due to the cold and solvents they used. the change made to p-51d old crow was dedicated to bud anderson and all 357th crew chief and ground support personnel who maintained the p-51 mustang during world war ii.

the north american x-15 was a rocket-powered research aircraft that was part of the usaf/nasa/usn x-series of experimental aircraft. designed to explore the problems of flight at very high speeds and altitudes it bridged the gap between manned flight in the atmosphere and space flight. after its initial test flights in 1959 it became the first winged aircraft to attain hypersonic velocities of mach 4 5 and 6 and to operate at altitudes above 30 500 meters. the x-15 and other research aircraft contributed to the advancement of aerospace technology. three x-15s were built in all and they made a total of 199 test flights the last one on october 24 1968. plans were made for a 200th x-15 flight to be launched over smith ranch nevada scheduled for november 21 1968. however various technical and weather delays caused the planned launch to slip at least six times until late december 1968. finally after a cancellation on december 20 1968 due to weather it was decided that there would not be a 200th flight. x-15 no. 1 was sent to the national air and space museum in washington dc. x-15 no. 2 is on display at the national museum of the united states air force at wright-patterson air force base near dayton ohio. x-15 no. 3 was destroyed in a crash on november 15 1967. twelve test pilots flew the x-15 including neil armstrong who would later become the first man on the moon and joe engle who went on to command space shuttle missions. each x-15 scale model that we offer is made from materials of the highest quality. every part of the model aircraft is handcrafted before undergoing several phases of priming and sanding. skilled artists carefully duplicate the details which are then sealed in with clear lacquer. a faithful reproduction of the original x-15 our replica will be perfect as an addition to a personal collection or as executive gifts and promotional incentives.
derived from the dc-9 the mcdonnell douglas md-80 is a twin-engine medium-range single-aisle commercial jet airplane. it was introduced commercially in october 1980 by swissair and can seat up to 172 passengers. douglas aircraft developed the dc-9 in the 1960s as a short-range companion to the larger dc-8. the md-80 was the second generation of the dc-9. it was originally called the dc-9-80 before it was redesignated in july 1983 as a marketing move to show that mcdonnell douglas had an airliner for the 1980s. the md-80 features a fuselage about 14 feet longer than the dc-9. the wings were redesigned by adding sections at the wing root and tip for a wing that is 28 percent larger. the cockpit avionics aerodynamics and engines were upgraded. it also has a higher maximum take-off weight greater fuel capacity and longer range than the dc-9. the md-80 has been used by airlines around the world. while many airlines have started to retire the aircraft in the 2000s it is still flown extensively by some including delta air lines on domestic routes. delta is the second largest operator of the md-80 after american airlines.
the f-22 raptor is the newest fighter aircraft of the united states air force (usaf). originally an air superiority fighter for use against the soviet air force it is also capable of ground attack electronic warfare and signals intelligence roles. the f-22 is a combination of stealth supercruise maneuverability integrated avionics and improved supportability. it performs both air-to-air and air-to-ground missions making it vital to the usaf. the raptor is capable of providing first-kill opportunities against threats. its sophisticated aerodesign advanced flight controls thrust vectoring and high thrust-to-weight ratio provide the capability to outmaneuver all current and projected aircraft. intended to be the leading american advanced tactical fighter in the early part of the 21st century the raptor is the world s most expensive fighter to date. the f-22 was born out of the advanced tactical fighter (atf) demonstration and validation program to develop a next-generation air superiority fighter to counter emerging worldwide threats inlcuding development and proliferation of soviet-era su-27 flanker type aircraft. in 1981 the air force put out a requirement for a new air superiority fighter that would replace the capability of the f-15 eagle incorporating emerging technologies such as advanced alloys fly-by-wire flight control systems and stealth technology. in october 1986 two contractor teams lockheed/boeing/general dynamics and northrop/mcdonnell douglas were selected to build prototypes. in august 1991 after a fly-off competition lockheed s yf-22 was declared the winner and the company was awarded the contract to produce the atf.
the p-47 thunderbolt is the largest single-engined fighter of the united states army air force (usaaf) fighters of world war ii and was manufactured by republic aviation. the p-47 thunderbolt was the product of russian immigrant alexander de seversky and georgian immigrant alexander kartveli who had left their homelands to escape the bolsheviks. the p-47s maiden flight was on may 6 1941 and was introduced in 1942. initial deliveries of the p-47s to the usaaf were to the 56th fighter group on long island. in 1942 p-47s prepared for combat operations in england. the first p-47 combat mission started in march 10 1943 and the mission failed due to radio malfucntions. the p-47 gradually became the best fighter-bomber which could carry 500 pound bombs the triple-tube m-8 4.5 inch rocket launchers and eventually hvars. p-47s were operated by several allied air arms during world war ii. there s a large number of surviving airframes exist in flying condition as well as in museum collections worldwide. a total of 15 686 p47s built.

the convair b-36 peacemaker was the first thermonuclear weapon delivery vehicle and the first operational strategic bomber to truly have intercontinental range. it was the largest piston-engined aircraft ever to be mass-produced. it was also the largest combat aircraft ever built although there have been larger military transports. the b-36 set the benchmark for subsequent us long range bombers such as the b-52 stratofortress and b-1 lancer. the development of the b36 was brought about by nazi germany s aggression and subsequently by the japanese attack on pearl harbor. the united states army air corps required a long range bomber and opened up a design competition on april 11 1941. despite the sense of urgency the b-36 program progressed slowly. existing technology failed to satisfy the military requirements early wartime demands exceeded materials and weapons more readily available received the highest priority during the war. the peacemaker had four bomb bays that could carry up to 86 000 pounds of bombs six remote-controlled retractable gun turrets and fixed tail and nose turrets. it was the only aircraft designed to carry the t12 cloud maker a gravity bomb capable of producing an earth quake bomb effect. the b-36 s maiden flight was on august 8 1946 and all variants served under the us air force strategic air command from 1948 to 1958. on labor day september 1 1952 two-thirds of the 7th and 11th bomb wing s b-36s were incapacitated not by enemy action but by a windstorm. at 6:42 pm a tornado made a direct hit on the carswell air force base scattering the enormous bombers like empty milk cartons. flight operations were transferred to nearby meacham field and other military bases. most of the planes were repaired and flying again in less than five weeks. the final version of the peacemaker the b-36j had two additional tanks which allowed an additional fuel load of 2 770 gallons. it also had a much stronger landing gear permitting a gross takeoff weight of 410 000 pounds. a total of 33 b-36js were accepted by the air force starting in 1953. phaseout was completed in 1959.
in 1930s the martin pbm-3 mariner was designed as a patrol bomber flying boat for the us navy. originally this flying boat was known as the martin 162. the first prototype - the quarter-scale 162a - flew in 1937. the full-scale prototype - the xpbm-1 - first flew in february 1939. there were 1 285 built. the type entering service was in september 1940. the pbm-3 mariner is a huge flying boat with a very graceful bird-like silhouette. it is designed for very long range operations. the craft is equipped to remain away from its base for protracted periods while fulfilling its duties as a patrol bomber convoy escort or fleet operations scout. it s capability to fly very long range mission is underscored by it having a galley and sleeping accommodations. the mariner was built to replace the older consolidated pby series but so many patrol planes were needed that it ended up as an addition and not a replacement. over 1 000 mariners were built during the war. they proved so useful and reliable that many remained in service for decades. the pbm-3 was similar to the pbm-1 in most respects differing mainly in fit of uprated p&w r-2600-12 engines with 1 270 kw (1 700 hp) each; larger and fixed wing floats; and revised engine nacelles that featured much bigger bombbays. only 32 pbm-3s as such were built and never saw formal service in their original configuration. 31 of them were converted to a transport configuration the "pbm-3r" and 18 new-build pbm-3rs were constructed as well. these machines had armor and armament removed with the turrets faired over; a reinforced floor cargo doors and a hoist; and removeable seating for 20 passengers though it was nothing unusual for them to carry 33 or more.

u.s. marine corps helicopter sqn. one (hmx-1) and the u.s. army executive flight detachment have as a primary mission the emergency evacuation of the president his family and other key government officials. after satisfying this mission these units furnish helicopter transportation for the president and others. in 1961 the vh-3d sea king began to replace the vh-34d as the primary executive transport. the vh-3d sea king succeeded the vh-34-d as the main administrator transportation in the year 1961. the helicopter was developed for the navy as a carrier-based all-weather anti-submarine helicopter with comprehensive internal modifications. a special security was provided for the electric structure and soft controls. self-sealing and crash-resistant fuel tanks together with energy-absorbing landing gear and seating had improved the wreckage survivability. in the year 1962 john f. kennedy has requested that the vip aircraft should have identifiable markings. the helicopters must have a green and white paint scheme on both sides of the fuselage an american flag on both sides of the engine cowling and the presidential seal on both sides of the nose. the service designations were removed. the sea king is still being used together with other presidential helicopters and can frequently be seen as the regular aircraft being used to transport president george bush to and from the white house lawn. the helicopter became a vip transportation and remained in service for more than 35 years. in addition to the passengers comfort a number of protective measures were utilized. the light armor protects the crew and passengers from tiny weaponry fire and medium explosive projectiles.
the f-15e strike eagle manufactured by mcdonnell douglas / boeing ids is a modern united states all-weather strike fighter designed for long-range interdiction of enemy ground targets deep behind enemy lines. on december 11 1986 the f-15e had its first flight. the f-15e became the newest fighter in tactical air command when the 405th tactical training wing luke air force base ariz. accepted delivery of the first production model in april 1988. the 4th fighter wing at seymour johnson air force base n.c. was the first operational f-15e strike eagle wing in the air force. a derivative of the f-15 eagle air superiority fighter the strike eagle proved its worth in desert storm carrying out deep strikes against high-value targets and providing close air support for coalition troops. the f-15e strike eagle can be distinguished from the f-15 eagle by its darker camouflage and the presence of the conformal fuel tanks attached to the aircraft s fuselage. this new version was designed to penetrate deep into enemy territory unescorted and strike military targets with pinpoint accuracy. the strike eagle employs two highly reliable pratt & whitney f100-pw-229 engines and was designed specifically as a two-person crew of pilot and weapons system officer. the lantrin (low altitude navigation and targeting infra-red for night) system enables the strike eagle to operate at night and in bad weather. the strike eagle can also be employed with up to an 11-ton payload and can carry the gbu-28 bunker buster a guided bomb developed to destroy strengthened underground bunkers. the strike eagle was first deployed in december 1989. during the gulf war in 1991 2 squadrons of 48 f-15e strike eagles demonstrated their power as multi-purpose fighter/attack planes.
the martin pbm mariner was a united states navy patrol bomber flying boat of world war ii and the early cold war period. it was designed to compliment the pby catalina in service. 1 285 pbm mariner were built with the first example flying on february 18 1939 and the type entering service in september 1940. the u.s. navy martin pbm-5 mariner patrol bomber bureau of aeronautics (bureau number 59172) was one of the 1 367 pbm mariners constructed by navy martin. it was delivered to the navy in january 1945. during the world war ii and cold war eras the pbm-5 mariner was in service with various navy units in a number of capacities. its last operational assignment was naval air station seattle washington in late 1948. the pbm-5 mariner was wrecked on may 6 1949 while being ferried across lake washington from naval air station seattle to the boeing seaplane ramp at renton washington where it was intended to be placed in storage. as of today the wreck of pbm-5 mariner remains where the aircraft came to rest in 1949 in the southernmost end of lake washington in the vicinity of renton just off the old seaplane ramp at the boeing plant. the pbm-5a is an amphibian plane with retractable landing gear. the aircraft was fitted with five gun turrets and bomb bays that were in the engine nacelles. the british royal airforce acquired 32 mariners. they were not used operationally and some were returned to the united states navy and twelve were transferred to the royal australian air force for transporting troops and cargo. the dutch navy acquired seventeen pbm-5a mariners at the end of 1955 for service in former dutch new guinea.
the beechcraft model 17 was the first aircraft produced by beech aircraft. a biplane with an atypical backward stagger (the upper wing inversely staggered behind the lower) it was a gamble for the company. produced during the great depression the expensive aircraft was designed as a high speed comfortable business plane. the aircraft is more popularly known as the staggerwing and first flew on november 4 1932. during its time it was considered to be the premier executive aircraft setting the standard for private passenger airplanes for many years to come. the staggerwing s unusual wing configuration and unique shape resulted in a design that maximized the pilot s visibility while minimizing the aircraft s tendency to stall. its retractable conventional landing gear which was uncommon at that time coupled with streamlining light weight and radial engines helped it perform significantly better than other biplane designs. the luxurious cabin could hold up to five passengers. sales started slowly at first and the staggerwing s high price tag warded off any potential buyers. only 18 aircraft were sold during the first year of production. however the handbuilt staggerwing gradually captured a substantial share of the passenger aircraft market. by the start of world war ii more than 424 planes had been sold. the staggerwing s speed made it a favorite of air racers during the 1930s. an early version of the model 17 won the 1933 texaco trophy race. in 1935 captain h. l. farquhar a british diplomat successfully flew around the world in a model b17r. aviator jackie cochran set a women s speed record of 203.9 mph and an altitude record of 30 000 feet while flying a staggerwing. the aircraft also performed well in the bendix race between 1936 and 1938. as world war ii approached a number of staggerwings saw service in various countries. the second spanish republic used the aircraft as bombers during the spanish civil war. china used it as ambulance planes in the fight against imperial japan. on october 2 1941 beech delivered a special camouflaged plane to prince bernhard of lippe-biesterfeld who used it for refugee work while he was in exile in london.
the hk-1 (h-4) spruce goose or hercules manufactured by hughes aircrafts is a cargo-type flying boat aircraft. it had its first and only flight for just over a mile on november 2 1947. this trial was simple vindication from the detractors of the program and it is now looked back upon as a great moment in flight history. the hercules is the largest flying boat ever built and has the largest wingspan and height of any aircraft in history. the engineers of the said airplane incorporated eight of the most powerful engines ever 3 000-horsepower pratt and whitney radial reciprocating engines with 17-foot diameter props. to feed the engines they created a mammoth fuel storage and delivery system. the entire airframe and surface structures are composed of laminated wood (primarily birch not spruce). birch was chosen because testing proved it light strong and resistant to splitting dry rot and deterioration. all primary control surfaces except the flaps are fabric covered. the aircraft s hull is divided into two areas: a flight deck for the operating crew and a large cargo hold. the h-4 was put into storage and carefully preserved until after howard robard hughes death in april of 1976. on february 27 1993 the hughes flying boat commonly known as the spruce goose arrived in mcminnville marking the end of the 1 055 mile 138 day odyssey from long beach. it survives in good condition and became an exciting tourist attraction at the evergreen aviation museum. the popular spruce goose is now appropriately regarded as a true american icon.

the thunder airbirds were the air demonstration squadron of the usaf. the thunderbirds performed aerobatic formation and solo-flying in specially marked us jet aircraft. the squadron was activated after six months training in unoffficial status on january 1 1953 as the 3600th air demonstration team based in arizona. their debut expedition was flown a week later and began public exhibitions at the 1953 cheyenne frontier days in cheyenne wyoming. by august the team had flown 26 shows. the first team leader was major general dick catledge. the first plane flown by the squadron was the f-84 thunderjet. the next year the thunderbirds performed their first overseas show in south america. the squadron s aircrafts were changed drastically by the years; in 1995 they changed their aircraft to 84-f thunderstreak; in 1956 they changed it to f-100 supersabre; then the team switched to f-35 thunderchief after the disbanding of the skyblazers. the thunderbirds also faced several disasters and challenges; while practicing the 4 plane diamond loop four crew members/pilots died and it was due to the pilot s miscalculations. it was then in 1982 that the team switched to f-16a fighting falcon. this transition was already under consideration before the diamond crash in january 18 1982. the f-16a was initially equipped with the westinghouse an/apg-66 pulse dropper radar pratt and whitney f-100-pw-200 rated at 14 670 lbf (106.0 kn) with afterburner. the usaf bought f-16as with delivery completed in march 1985. the thunderbirds still continue to fly the f-16 until today.
starting in 1925 with the p-1 curtiss built a long series of fighters carrying the name hawk. of the eight different p-6 models produced the p-6e remains the best known. originally designated the y1p-22 it was later redesignated the p-6e because of the similarity to the other p-6 series airplanes. the p-6e was never used in combat but it is perhaps the best-known of all the between wars army pursuit aircraft. despite its excellent performance only 46 p-6e`s were ordered because of the shortage of funds for the air corps during the austere days of the depression. the p-6es served between 1932 and 1937 with the 1st pursuit group (17th and 94th ps) at selfridge and with the 8th pursuit group (33rd ps) at langley field virginia. numerous accidents claimed at least 27 of the 46 aircraft delivered. as the p-6es became obsolete instead of receiving depot overhauls they were allowed to wear out in service and were scrapped or sold. at least one survived into 1942 in united states army air forces service.
the a-7 corsair ii is a carrier-based subsonic light attack aircraft and was one of the first combat aircraft produced by chance vought. the a-7 was one of the first combat aircraft featuring a head-up display (hud) doppler-bounded inertial navigation system and a turbofan engine. the a-7 first entered service with the us navy during the vietnam conflict and was then adopted by the united states air force. the a-7 corsair ii was nicknamed as "sluf" (short little ugly feller) by pilots. the a-7s were used as a deception aircraft by the group between 1981 and 1989. the a-7b has a general ease of flying and excellent forward visibility but lacks in engine thrust. the a-7b incorporates a tf30-p-8 engine with 12 190 lbf of thrust. an a-7 donated from the national museum of naval aviation at pensacola florida is located on the side of the road just outside lake city florida. an a-7 can also be found at at akron-canton airport hangar at maps air museum in akron ohio. there is also one mounted at the atlanta road side of naval air station atlanta in marietta georgia. another a-7 is on display at tillamook air museum and another a-7 is located behind a fence in the parking lot of the evergreen aviation museum in mcminnville oregon. there were many a-7s which survived. in 1971 a-7bs which survived were further upgraded to tf30-p-408 with 13 390 lbf of thrust and there were 196 a-7bs built.

the republic f-105 thunderchief also called as the "thud" was the first single-seat supersonic all-weather strike fighter-bomber used by the u.s. air force. first flown on october 2 1955 the thunderchief entered service in 1958. aside from being the largest single-engine tactical aircraft in history the f-105 was notable for its large internal bomb bay and unique swept-forward engine inlets in the wing roots. the wing was highly swept and incorporated low-speed ailerons and high-speed spoilers for lateral control and a droop-snoot leading edge. originally designed to deliver nuclear weapons at supersonic speeds the f-105 thunderchief like the b-52 was pressed into service delivering iron bombs to north vietnam. in this role the f-105 excelled and by the end of 1970 the f-105 had flown 75% of the bombing missions to north vietnam. with over 20 000 thunderchief sorties were flown with 382 aircraft lost (nearly half of the 833 produced) including 62 operational casualties. although it lacked the agility of smaller mig fighters usaf f-105s demonstrated the effectiveness of guns and were credited with downing 27.5 enemy aircraft. the f-105d variant was the definitive production model of the thunderchief series. the d-model was an all-weather strike fighter bomber fitted with monopulse and doppler radar for night or bad weather operations. this radar was capable of terrain avoidance commands. the original weapons bay designed for nuclear stores was sealed and fitted with additional fuel tanks. bombs were carried on multiple weapons racks on the centerline of the fuselage and on wing pylons. the aircraft was fitted with a retractable in-flight refueling probe. during the vietnam war f-105 units operated from bases in thailand. first flew on june 9 1959 the f-105d entered service with 335th tfs in 1960. the last f-105d was withdrawn from usaf service on july 12 1980. a total of 610 d model of the thunderchief were built.
the north american aviation p-51 mustang is a long-range single-seat fighter aircraft that served with allied forces in the middle years of world war ii becoming one of the conflict s most effective and recognizable aircraft. the p-51 flew most of its wartime missions as a bomber escort in raids over germany to help ensure allied air superiority from early 1944. in late 1939 with the likelihood of full scale war in europe a major concern the british royal air force (raf) was looking for methods of quickly increasing its fighter strength. in april 1940 the british air purchasing commission approached north american aviation with the intent of having them build p-40s for the raf. since the p-40 design went back to 1933 james h. "dutch" kendelberger president of north american offered to build an entirely new advanced fighter. the british agreed and the p-51 took its maiden flight on october 26 1940. as well as being economical to produce the mustang was a fast well-made and highly durable aircraft. it also saw combat against the japanese in the pacific war. during the korean war the p-51 started out as the united nations main fighter but was relegated to a ground attack role when it was supplanted by jet fighters early in the conflict. one of the very few fighter pilots in world war ii to achieve ace status in both the pacific and european theaters colonel john landers flew the p-51d mustang named "big beautiful doll". his reputable flying career was concluded with 14.5 victories 4.5 of which and an additional 20 ground victories were achieved in the mustang. big beautiful doll was one of the most colourfully painted p-51s of the era.
the supersonic long-range all-weather f-4 phantom ii was designed for the united states navy (usn) by mcdonnell douglas. it first entered service in 1960. during the vietnam war it was the primary air superiority fighter and a workhorse fighter-bomber for the us air force (usaf) navy and marine corps. by 1963 it had been adopted by the usaf for the fighter-bomber role. when production ended in 1981 a total of 5 195 f-4s had been built making it the most numerous american supersonic military aircraft. in 2000 over 1 000 units were in service with 11 nations worldwide. innovations in the f-4 included an advanced pulse-doppler radar and extensive use of titanium in the airframe. it could carry up to 8 480 kg of weapons such as air-to-air and air-to-ground missiles as well as unguided guided and nuclear bombs. the f-4e is the leading phantom model with 1 389 planes built. it took its maiden flight on june 30 1967. the f-4e had an additional fuselage fuel tank leading-edge slats for increased maneuverability an improved engine and an internally mounted 20 mm multibarrel gun with an improved fire-control system. the slats weapons and radar controls were optimized for dogfighting thus improving the aircraft s air-to-air capabilities. in air combat the f-4 s greatest advantage was its thrust which permitted a skilled pilot to engage and disengage from the fight at will. due to its distinctive appearance and its widespread service with various militaries the f-4 is one of the best known icons of the cold war. it performed well in the vietnam war and arab-israeli conflicts with f-4 crews achieving 393 aerial victories and completing countless ground attack sorties. the phantom ii has the distinction of being the last us fighter to attain ace status in the 20th century. it has also set 16 world records and was the only aircraft used by both the usaf thunderbirds and the usn blue angels.
the me-109 messerschmitt was designed by willy messerschmitt and was originally powered by a rolls-royce kestrel v engine. it was one of the first true modern fighters of the era. the prototype me-109 first flew in 1935 and that same year the me-109 won a fighter competition. the me-109b and c models achieved great success in spain with the legion condor s fighter unit. the progressive development in the pre-war years resulted in a more powerful and heavier armed versions of the me-109. the me-109 was flown by the three top-scoring fighter aces of world war ii including gunther rall with 275 victories. bf 109 was the official designation since its design was sent in by the bayerische flugzeugwerke company and was used extensively in all official german documents dealing with this aircraft. after july 1938 the company was renamed as messerschmitt ag the time when erhard milch finally allowed willy messerschmitt to acquire the company. the "me" designation and mdash (except those already assigned with the bf prefix) were to be carried by all messerchmitt aircraft since then. the me-109 has basically the smallest airframe that willy messerschmitt attached to the most powerful engine. the me-109 remained a formidable air superiority fighter throughout world war ii.

the os2u kingfisher manufactured by vought was the u.s. navy s first catapult-launched monoplane observation floatplane. the os2u first flew on march 1 1938. the os2u was a compact mid-wing monoplane with a big central float and small stabilizing floats. performance was modest because of its light engine. the os2u could also operate on fixed wheeled taildragger landing gear. the os2u came in both float and land-based configurations and served as observer aircraft anti-submarine aircraft and rescue aircraft. the kingfisher s most important role during the war was as rescuer of downed aviators and was second only to the pby catalina in this job. on november 11 1942 a kingfisher known as "the bug" which had survived the attack on pearl harbor - rescued captain eddie rickenbacker and the crew of the b-17 he was with after they crashed in the pacific and survived 28 days in life rafts. after rescuing pilot capt. w.t. cherry and four others on november 11 "the bug" found rickenbacker s raft the next day. unable to fly all three survivors back at one go lt. william f. eadie the pilot taxied the airplane 40 miles through the open sea with rickenbacker and one crewman lashed to the wings while the most seriously-ill survivor was stuffed in the rear seat on the lap of arm1 l.h. boutte the crewman. "the bug" survived this mission and continued to fly throughout the war.
the spirit of st. louis is a custom-built airplane which was flown by charles lindbergh. the spirit of st. louis is officially known as the ryan nyp designed by donald a. hall of ryan airlines in san diego california. lindbergh wanted to increase fuel efficiency and he has the opinion that single-engine planes could travel farther and it led to the design of the spirit of st. louis which was one of the most streamlined aircraft at that time. donald a. hall decided that the tail and control surfaces would not be altered from his original ryan m2 design. it resulted to a less stable aircraft by which the experienced lindbergh nevertheless approved. there was a dispute about the preference of design since the estimated 40-hour flight would be very challenging in terms of pilot fatigue. hall and lindbergh weighed the advantages and disadvantages of the setup determining that an unstable aircraft would help keep lindbergh awake and this resulted in a plane with unstable flight characteristics with a tendency to curve dip and bank at random times and the cockpit was also purposely uncomfortable but it was custom-fitted to lindbergh s tall and lanky frame. lindbergh also insisted the elimination of unnecessary weight such as radio since it was unreliable at that time. on may 20 and 21 1927 spirit of st. louis piloted by lindbergh made the first non-stop solo transatlantic flight making him an instant celebrity and media star. he won the $25 000 orteig prize. lindbergh subsequently flew the spirit of st. louis to belgium and england before going back to the united states upon order by president calvin coolidge. lindbergh flew the spirit of st. louis on promotional and goodwill tours across the united states and latin america. spirit of st. louis final flight was on april 30 1928 having flown from st. louis to bolling field washington d.c. wherein lindbergh presented the historic aircraft to the smithsonian institution. the original spirit of st. louis is currently displayed at the national air and space museum in washington dc in the main atrium on the same side as the bell x-1 and spaceshipone. many static and flying replicas have been made. there were three replicas of the spirit of st. louis converted from ryan b-1s for the 1957 film the spirit of st. louis starring james stewart
more than a million spectators were cheering as raf flight officer h.r.d. waghorn set down his supermarine s-6 in southern england s solent channel on september 10 1929. waghorn had just flown an average of 328 mph around the triangular course to defeat his italian rivals and capture britain s second straight schneider trophy win. france italy and the u.s. had all won the schneider trophy in the past as had britain. but none of the four had managed to win three out of five consecutive races as required for retiring the trophy. now britain stood within reach of the elusive goal and shortly after waghorn s victory prime minister mcdonald vowed that england would do her level best to win the next race in 1931. but a few months later mcdonald s air ministry stunned the aero club of britain -- sponsors of the country s schneider trophy entries -- by announcing the government would give no financial support to future schneider trophy efforts. without this financial support the aero club could not develop a new racer to compete with heavily subsidized french and italian challengers expected in 1931. the british public was outraged. their country s prestige was at stake. soon several million pounds were raised to support the home team. disaster struck the italian and french teams. mid-summer crashes claimed a top plane and top pilot from each. crippled by these losses both countries withdrew from the race a week before it was scheduled to be run. on sunday september 13 1931 raf lieutenant john boothman flew the s-6b unopposed over the solent channel course at an average speed of 340 mph. with courage skill and a little bit of luck england had retired the schneider trophy. was it worth all the money work and heartache to claim a fairly ugly now almost forgotten trophy? the british think it was. because five years after the 1931 race reginald j. mitchell introduced a new rolls royce powered interceptor fighter incorporating many lessons he had learned designing schneider trophy seaplanes. someone gave mitchell s fighter a nickname which stuck: "spitfire."
the gee bee r-1 was designed and built for the 1932 races. the gee bee r-1 is a fairly constructed aircraft. only the best materials were used and the workmanship was incredible. the wings were covered with mahogany plywood and covered with "balloon-fabric" for added strength. the most unusual feature was its pilot position just ahead of the vertical fin. the r-1 and r-2 were considerably larger than the previous model z. the r-1 and r-2 are very similar except that the r-1 has a larger and more powerful pratt & whitney r1340 "wasp" engine and it is specifically made for the thompson trophy. the r-2 was built for the bendix trophy races. the biggest difference between the two aircraft was that the r-2 had two fuel tanks totaling a 302 gallons versus a single 160 gallon tank in the r-1. the r-2 has a 20-gallon oil tank and the r-2 also has streamlined running lights in the wings and on the tail for night flights. the r-1 has a speed of 294.38 miles per hour and a cruising range of 925 miles.
the sikorsky hh-53 or the super jolly green giant was ordered by the usaf for search and rescue operations. the sikorsky hh-53 is the usaf version of the ch-53 sea stallion helicopter. the main reason for the development of sikorsky hh-53 is to replace the hh-3 which is also called the jolly green giant. later on the sikorsky hh-53 was upgraded to mh-53. a lot of sikorsky hh-53 variants were produced such as the hh-53b which has a retractable in-flight refueling probe on the right side of the nose the hh-53c which was an interim type that dispenses with the fuel tank bracing struts the mh-53h which retained the in-flight refueling probe external fuel tanks rescue hoist and three gun armament the mh-53j which is the largest and most powerful sikorsky hh-53 variant produced by the us air force and the mh-53m has been modified with the interactive defensive avionics system. on march 15 1967 the sikorsky hh-53 super jolly green giant made its first flight at wright patterson air force base ohio. the sikorsky hh-53 was faster and had tripled the take off of the hh-3. other than that the sikorsky hh-53 was larger more heavily armed and with almost double the shaft horsepower. thus the sikorsky hh-53 had better overall performance and hover capability.

the bell x-2 starbuster was a rocket-powered swept-wing research aircraft built to investigate the structural effects of aerodynamic heating as well as stability and control effectiveness at high speeds and altitudes. the program was developed jointly in 1945 by bell aircraft corporation the united states air force and the national advisory committee for aeronautics (naca) to explore aerodynamic problems of supersonic flight and to expand the speed and altitude regimes obtained with the earlier x-1 series of research aircraft. providing adequate stability and control for aircraft flying at high supersonic speeds was only one of the major difficulties facing flight researchers as they approached mach 3. for speeds in that region they knew they would also begin to encounter a thermal barrier severe heating effects caused by aerodynamic friction. constructed of stainless steel and a copper-nickel alloy and powered by a two-chamber xlr25 2 500 to 15 000 lbf (11 to 67 kn) thrust throttleable rocket engine the x-2 was designed to probe this region. while the x-2 exceeded mach 3 in the course of doing so it uncovered the supersonic aircraft problem of inertial coupling. on its last flight the aircraft crashed and the pilot was killed.
the joint strike fighter (jsf) is a joint multinational acquisition program for the united states air force navy marine corps and eight cooperative international partners. it was created to replace various aircraft while keeping development production and operating costs down. the objective is to develop a technically superior and affordable fleet of aircraft that would be capable of a wide range of missions in a variety of theaters. the program began in november 1996 with a 5-year competition between lockheed martin and boeing to determine the most capable and affordable preliminary aircraft design. on october 26 2001 the contract was awarded to lockheed martin whose x-35 experimental aircraft outperformed boeing s x-32. the jsf aircraft design has three variants: conventional takeoff and landing (f-35a) short takeoff and vertical landing (f-35b) and carrier-based (f-35c). the program s hallmark of affordability is achieved through a high degree of commonality among the variants; 80 percent of the parts are shared. the f-35c naval variant will have a larger folding wing and larger control surfaces for improved low-speed control and stronger landing gear for the stresses of carrier landings. the larger wing area provides increased range and payload with twice the range on internal fuel compared with the f/a-18c hornet achieving the same goal as the heavier f/a-18e/f super hornet. the us navy intends to buy 480 f-35cs to replace the hornets. it will also serve as a stealthier complement to the super hornet. the f35c is expected to be available beginning in 2012.
the a320 is a short-to-medium range commercial passenger aircraft manufactured by airbus. first delivered in 1988 it pioneered the use of digital fly-by-wire flight control systems in a commercial aircraft. with more than 3 000 planes of the a320 family built it is the second best selling jet airliner family of all time after its primary competition the boeing 737. northwest airlines owns 73 a320s and the fleet is used for domestic short-medium haul routes along the united states canada and mexico.
the bell x-1 is a rocket plane manufactured by bell aircraft and was originally designated as the xs-1. the bell x-1 was the first aircraft to exceed the speed of sound in controlled level flight. it was primarily used by the united states air force and naca (now nasa). the bell x-1 took its place in history on october 14 1947 as the first aircraft to break the "sound barrier". the recorded speed was mach 1.015 or 670 mph at an altitude of 42 000 ft. the "plane" was flown by chief test-pilot chuck yeager. the x-1 program became the pattern for all subsequent x-craft projects and it defined and solidified the post-war cooperative union by the naca in the x-1 tests then provided a basis for american aviation supremacy during the 20th century. the bell x-1 has a crew of 1. it has a maximum speed of 957 mph (mach 1.26). the bell x-1 incorporates 4 reaction motors xlr-11-rm3 liquid fuel rocket with 6 000 lbf each.

the tuskegee airmen was the popular name of a group of african american pilots who flew with distinction during world war ii. the tuskegee airmen were initially equipped with p-40 warhawks briefly with p-39 airacobras later with p-47 thunderbolts and finally with the p-51 mustang the airplane in which they became most identifed with. the p-51 mustang is a long-range single-seat fighter aircraft and became one of the conflict s most successful and recognizable aircraft. the p-51 mustang is credited for providing very effective long range bomber escort. the allied daylight bombing campaign proved extremely successful by strangling the support lines of the enemy and nearly stopping the production of war-time machinery. the p-51 mustang and the crew who had flown them saved lives in the skies and on the ground. the concept of the p-51 mustang began more than three years before the first daylight bombing missions and the heavy losses. it was often accepted that the p-51 mustang was designed to be an escort fighter. by the time heavy bomber losses were at hand the p-51b and p-51c with outstanding range were already in production and being delivered to bases in england. the north american mustang was the immediate choice and the bombers fondly called them as "little friends". with the hard work of warbird fanatics around the world there are about 280 p-51s that still exist today with more than half still airworthy. a few remaining p-51s have the distinction of serving for more than 30 years with almost four different air forces around the world.
the vc-25 (also known as 747-200) is most notable for its role as air force one the callsign of any u.s. airforce aircraft carrying the president of the united states. the vc-25 differs from the standard boeing 747 relating to interior dimensions and security features. the vc-25 is capable of flying 7 800 miles without refueling and can accommodate more than 79 passengers. each vc-25 cost approximately us$325 million. the vc-25 replaced the vc-137 as the mainstays of the airforce one fleet. on some occasions the planes are used to transport the vice president of the united states for which service they adopt the callsign airforce two. these aircraft are maintained and operated as military operations. the vc-25 can also be operated as a military command center in the event of an incident such as a nuclear attack. operational modifications include aerial refueling capability and anti-aircraft missile countermeasures. the vc-25 has also been used to transport deceased former presidents. the remains of ronald reagan and general ford were transported by sam 28000 and 29000 respectively to wsahington for their state funerals and then on to their final resting places. the vc-25 replaced 707 as presidential aircraft of john f. kennedy in 1990.
