the german battleship bismarck is one of the most famous warships of world war ii. the warship was named after the 19th-century german chancellor otto von bismarck. the bismarck class battleships were a class of battleships built by germany for world war ii. the class ships were the third-largest battleships ever completed by displacement behind the japanese yamato class and the iowa class. the bismarck and the tirpitz the only two ships of the bismarck class were laid down in 1936 and launched three years later nominally 35 000 tons each in accordance with the 1923 washington naval treaty after the tonnage restriction set in place by the treaty of versailles was effectively lifted by the anglo-german naval agreement. they were a follow up to the scharnhorst battlecruisers being quite similar in design armour and outward appearance. although bismarck and tirpitz were nearly identical insofar as basic configuration and dimensions bismarck has become something of a naval legend while tirpitz led a comparatively unglamorous life. the bismarck class embodied much of what made germany s world war i battleships outstanding combat vessels and their design was broadly influenced by the last german battleship classes of world war i. the bismarck class was reasonably well suited as a commerce raider with a good operational range and sufficient speed to elude any pursuit. the bismarck class top speed was greater than any opposing british capital ship including their largest battlecruiser hood and new king george v class battleships. the wreck of bismarck was discovered on june 8 1989 by dr. robert ballard the oceanographer also responsible for finding the titanic.
the f8f-1 bearcat was the last piston-engine carrier-based fighter plane built by grumman. production of the f8f-1 began six months after the first flight of its prototype. affectionately called bear it was intended to be an interceptor aircraft. the plane`s design was influenced by an evaluation of a captured german focke-wulf fw 190 fighter in england. it carries the pratt & whitney r-2800 double wasp which was the most powerful and reliable radial engine of its time. by building the smallest and lightest airframe possible grumman was able to produce a fast and highly maneuverable plane. the bearcat was 20% lighter and had a rate of climb that was 30% higher than its predecessor the hellcat. pilots often called it hot rod for its fantastic acceleration and climbing ability. it was the first navy fighter to have an all-bubble canopy offering the pilot a 360-degree visibility. the first production aircraft was delivered in february 1945 and the first squadron was operational by may but before the bearcat could see combat the second world war had already ended. postwar the bearcat became a major part of the united states navy equipping 24 fighter squadrons. it is often mentioned as one of the best handling piston-engine fighters ever built even outperforming many early jets. it is also capable of aerobatic performances and was flown by the navy`s blue angels in 1946. the french and thai air forces have also operated the bearcat. under the french it served as a fighter-bomber in the first indochina war during the early 1950s.
the b-2 spirit aircraft began as a black project identified as high altitude penetrating bomber. then it became the advanced technology bomber utilizing the code senior cejay. afterwards it became the b-2 spirit. in 1980s 23 billion dollars were spent secretly for studies and advancement of the aircraft. in 1985 the aircraft became a low altitude bomber from a high altitude bomber which they spent an extra cost for. the b-2 was in service in three operations. its first appearance was in the kosovo war in 1999. it first brought the satellite guided jdam in operations. because of that it was used in operation enduring freedom in afghanistan and in operation iraqi freedom. the b-2 is extremely computerized. and unlike those single seat fighter aircrafts a crew can sleep inside a b-2 set his meals or use a toilet. the b-2 spirit is a stealth heavy bomber and has the ability of organizing both nuclear and conventional armaments. it is privately operated by the united states air force. its advancement was a highlight in the upgrading program of the united states department of defense. the b-2 aircrafts 2nd generation stealth technology was to assist the aircraft`s penetration function to go on tremendous anti-aircraft protection.

the tondelayo was one of three b-25ds that sunk a 6 000-ton freighter in the south pacific during world war ii. its story was unique in the fact that during the battle the tondelayo s engine was shot out and for over an hour it combated 50 japanese fighter planes as it headed down the new britain coast. the other two accompanying b-25s were shot down during the battle. the plane s turret gunner was given credit for shooting down five japanese fighters and the crew earned the distinguished unit citation and silver stars. despite tremendous damage "tondelayo" was returned to service after it was repaired... like a phoenix rising from the ashes.
the seawolf class attack submarine (ssn) was the intended successor to the los angeles class ordered at the end of the cold war in 1989. at one time an intended fleet of 29 submarines was to be built over a ten-year period later reduced to twelve. the end of the cold war and budget constraints led to the fleet being canceled at three boats in 1995 and led to the design of the smaller virginia class. they are quieter than the previous los angeles class submarines larger faster have twice as many torpedo tubes for a total of 8 and carry more weapons but were also much more expensive. they were intended to combat the then-threat of large numbers of advanced soviet ballistic-missile submarines in deep ocean such as the typhoon class and to reply to the new soviet akula class attack submarines. they were built using hy-100 steel rather than hy-80 steel which is what previous classes had used. however they also have extensive equipment for shallow-water operations including a floodable silo capable of deploying eight combat swimmers and their equipment at once. the boats can also carry up to 50 ugm-109 tomahawk cruise missiles for attacking land and shipping targets.
the boeing kc-135 stratotanker is an aerial refueling tanker aircraft that has been in service with the united states air force (usaf) since 1957. this unique asset greatly enhances the air force s capability to accomplish its primary missions of global reach and global power. the kc-135 also provides aerial refueling support to the navy marine corps and other allied nations. additionally it is capable of transporting litter and ambulatory patients during aeromedical evacuations. the stratotanker first flew on august 17 1956. it is characterized by four turbofans mounted under 35 degree swept wings a horizontal stabilizer mounted on the fuselage and a hi-frequency radio antenna protruding forward from the top of the vertical stabilizer. depending on fuel storage configuration the aircraft can carry up to 83 000 pounds of cargo. the kc-135r is a re-engined version that can offload 50 percent more fuel is 25 percent more fuel efficient costs 25 percent less to operate and is 96 percent quieter than the original variant. the last kc-135 was delivered to the usaf in 1965. aside from its primary role as an inflight aircraft refueler the kc-135 has assisted in several research projects at the nasa dryden flight research center at edwards air force base california. nasa also has operated several kc-135 aircraft without the tanker equipment installed as the vomit comet zero-gravity simulator aircraft.
the hawker 4000 super mid-size business jet developed by raytheon aircraft company is the largest in the hawker family. originally known as hawker horizon prior to november 2005 it features an all-composite fuselage and swept aluminum wing design. it made its first flight on august 11 2001 and official debut in november 2005 when a development aircraft was displayed at the national business aviation association convention. the 4000 can seat eight to twelve passengers. the eight-seat cabin holds four pairs of club chairs with writing tables. the aircraft s carbon composite construction gives it more interior space than many jets in its class. this composite construction also makes the aircraft much lighter than a standard aluminum structure allowing a maximum range of 3 445 nautical miles and a service ceiling of 45 000 feet. the aircraft s avionics system provides full authority automatic throttle moving map displays and vertical navigation. the cabin air conditioning and pressurization system is digitally controlled which can significantly improve passenger comfort when gas becomes trapped in the gastrointestinal tract middle ear and paranasal sinuses. the us federal aviation administration granted the hawker 4000 type certification in december 2004. shortly after the first aircraft was delivered to jack deboer a businessman from kansas. final type certification was given on november 21 2006 and production deliveries are scheduled to begin in september 2007. as of march 2007 a total of more than 130 aircraft have been ordered. customers include the jordan grand prix racing team flight options llc and netjets. netjets placed a contract for 50 aircraft in december 2005 the largest single commercial order in the history of raytheon aircraft. deliveries will begin by the end of 2007 through 2013. in may 2007 netjets europe ordered 32 aircraft which are slated for delivery between 2008 and 2016.
uss yorktown cv-10 is an essex-class aircraft carrier of the united states navy. the cv-10 was initially named as bon homme richard. on september 26 1942 it was renamed in tribute to uss yorktown cv-5. t became the fourth us warship to bear the name of a town in virginia. the cv-10 was reconstructed to scb-27a design by the puget sound naval shipyard which began in march 1951. it was recommissioned in february 1953. the cv-10 was reclassified as an "attack aircraft carrier" and was redesignated cva-10. the cv-10 has a modernized flight deck with an enclosed "hurricane" bow. the cv-10 was reclassified as an "antisumarine warfare support aircraft carrier" and was redesignated as cvs-10 on september 1 1957. the cv-10 was formally dedicated as the first ship of the naval and maritime museum.
the x-5 was the world s first airplane to vary the sweepback of its wings in flight. it was built to prove the theory that by increasing the sweepback of an airplane s wings after takeoff. the x-5 was based upon the design of a messerschmitt p. 1101 airplane discovered in germany at the end of world war ii. it first flew on june 20 1951. bell company test pilot jean "skip" ziegler made the initial phase i flights to prove the airplane s airworthiness. the bell x-5 was developed to check the feasibility of changing the sweep angle of an aircraft s wings in flight. this produce advantages from both an operational and research point of view. an operational aircraft could take off with its wings fully extended reducing both its take off speed and the length of the runway needed.

the tuskegee airmen was the popular name of a group of african american pilots who flew with distinction during world war ii. the tuskegee airmen were initially equipped with p-40 warhawks briefly with p-39 airacobras later with p-47 thunderbolts and finally with the p-51 mustang the airplane in which they became most identifed with. the p-51 mustang is a long-range single-seat fighter aircraft and became one of the conflict s most successful and recognizable aircraft. the p-51 mustang is credited for providing very effective long range bomber escort. the allied daylight bombing campaign proved extremely successful by strangling the support lines of the enemy and nearly stopping the production of war-time machinery. the p-51 mustang and the crew who had flown them saved lives in the skies and on the ground. the concept of the p-51 mustang began more than three years before the first daylight bombing missions and the heavy losses. it was often accepted that the p-51 mustang was designed to be an escort fighter. by the time heavy bomber losses were at hand the p-51b and p-51c with outstanding range were already in production and being delivered to bases in england. the north american mustang was the immediate choice and the bombers fondly called them as "little friends". with the hard work of warbird fanatics around the world there are about 280 p-51s that still exist today with more than half still airworthy. a few remaining p-51s have the distinction of serving for more than 30 years with almost four different air forces around the world.
the f/a-18 hornet is a modern supersonic carrier-capable fighter and attack aircraft designed for both air and ground attacks. it was developed in 1970 based upon the experimental yf-17 designed by the mcdonnell douglas company for the u.s. navy and u.s. marine corps. the f/a-18 has been the aerial show aircraft for the blue angels since 1986. its main missions include fighter escort fleet air defense suppression of enemy air defenses interdiction close air support and reconnaissance. its versatility and dependability have proven it to be a useful carrier specialist but has been remarked for its low range and lack of payload compared to other strike fighter aircrafts. the hornet first flew on november 18 1978 and was introduced to several other nations on january 7 1983. a total of 1 458 f/a-18a built. in 1970 the f/a-18 hornet served for the u.s. navy and u.s. marine corps. the hornet is also used by the air forces of several other nations. the f/a-18a hornet is a single-seat fighter/attack hornet variant by the u.s. marine corps. the u.s marine corps is a part of american military which is responsible for providing power projection from the sea utilizing the mobility of the u.s. navy to rapidly deliver combined-arms task forces. the f/a-18a was a previously designated f-18a and a-18a. the hornet has a dual fighter/attack mission capability. the f/a-18a was also used by the u.s. naval flight demonstration team the blue angels in their air shows and other special events across the us and worldwide. on november 8 1986 during the 40th anniversary of the blue angels the team unveiled the f/a-18a as their newest aircraft.
the n2s is a biplane used to train carrier pilots at the start of world war ii and was nicknamed "yellow peril" since it has a brightly colored paint job intended to alert everyone around that a novice pilot was flying it and because the plane itself has poorly designed gear which gave it a tendency to "ground loop." after world war ii the remaining stock of n2s s were transferred to the naval academy remaining in service until 1960.
the sole dga-6 was constructed in 1934 by gordon israel and benjamin howard. it featured a steel tube fuselage with a plywood skinned wing. with benny howard as pilot and gordon israel as co-pilot mister mulligan placed first in the 1935 bendix with an average speed of 238.7 mph between los angeles and cleveland. harold neumann flew mister mulligan in the 1935 thompson trophy and captured first place after roscoe turner lost his engine and dropped out. the aircraft shed a prop blade in the 1936 bendix race was lost totaled without loss of life in an off airport landing. howard went on to produce a commercial version of the ship the dga-8 which was followed by the dga-9 dga-11 and dga-12.
t-1 jayhawk is a medium-range twin-engine jet aircraft used by the united states air force s air education and training command for advanced pilot training. in january 1992 the first t-1a was delivered to reese air force base texasand in 1993 student training began. since the late 1950 s air force undergraduate pilot training students have trained in two aircraft the t-37 tweet and the t-38 talon with the former as the primary trainer and the latter was the advanced trainer. in 1993 with the introduction of specialized undergraduate pilot training the t-37 still continued to be the student s primary training aircraft and later the t-6 texan ii but the advanced phase was tailored for students follow-on assignments. advanced training is conducted in the t-38 for students going to bombers and fighters and the t-44 or tc-12b for students who are selected for airlift. the t-1a incorporates two pratt and whitney jt15d-5 turbofan engines. the t-1a has a crew for 3; one for the instructor pilot and two for student pilots. it has a maximum speed of 468 knots and a range of 2 100 nm. the t-1a is used at columbus afb miss. laughlin afb texas and vance afb okla and is also used at randolph afb texas for training instructor pilots.

the boeing 727 is a mid-size narrow-body three-engine commercial jet airliner. it first flew in 1963 and for over a decade boeing 727 was considered the most produced commercial jet airliner in the world. 1 831 boeing 727s were delivered. the boeing 727 s sales record for the most jets bought in history was broken in the early 1990s by the boeing 737. in august 2006 a total of 127 boeing 727-100 aircraft and 493 boeing 727-200 aircraft were in airline service. the boeing 727-200 is a stretched version of the 727-100. the -200 is 20 feet longer (153 feet 2 inches) than the -100 (133 feet 2 inches). a ten foot "plug" was added in front of the wings and another ten foot "plug" was added behind them. the wing span and height remain the same on both the -100 and -200 (108 feet and 34 feet respectively). the gross weight was increased from 169 000 to 209 500 pounds. the dorsal intake of the number 2 engine was also redesigned to be round in shape as opposed to oval as it was on the 100 series. at the turn of the 21st century the 727 was still in service with a few airline fleets. however because in the meantime the u.s. faa and the icao had changed their requirements for overwater operations most major airlines had already begun to switch to twinjets aircraft with only two engines which are more fuel-efficient and quieter than the notoriously loud three-engined 727. also the 727 was one of the last airliners in service to have a three-person flight crew including a flight engineer a crewmember whose job is performed by computerized systems on newer planes. the boeing 727 proved very successful with airlines worldwide partly because of its capability to use smaller runways while still flying medium range routes. thus boeing 727 effectively allowed airlines to attract passengers from cities with large populations but smaller airports to worldwide tourist destinations.
the x-4 bantam is an aircraft designed and built by northtop aircraft inc for naca (now nasa). it is a single-place low swept-wing and semi-tailless and had no horizontal tail surfaces. the x-4 emphasizes the importance of tail surfaces for proper control effectiveness in the transonic speed range and was also used to investigate the characteristic problems of tailless airplanes at low speeds such as marginal longitudinal stability and control. the x-4 bantam s mission was to obtain in-flight data on the stability and control of semi-tailless aircraft at high subsonic speeds. x-4 bantam s maiden flight was on december 16 1948 piloted by charles tucker. the x-4 is powered by two westinghouse xj-30 turbojet engines with 1 600 lb of thrust each boosting the x-4 s speed up to 620 mph and up to altitudes of 40 000 ft. the northrop x-4 bantam was a small twin-jet airplane that had no horizontal tail surfaces depending instead on combined elevator and aileron control surfaces for control in pitch and roll attitudes. the first x-4 was delivered to muroc air force base california in november 1948. it underwent taxi tests and made its first flight on december 15 1948. however it turned out to be mechanically unreliable and made only ten flights. the second x4 proved far more reliable. both aircraft were later turned over to the us air force and the national advisory committee for aeronautics. the final project for the x-4 took place on september 29 1953. the first x 4 was then transferred to the united states air force academy colorado springs colorado before being returned to edwards air force base. the second x-4 went to the national museum of the united states air force at wright-patterson air force base near dayton ohio where it remains on display.
the sikorsky hh-53 or the super jolly green giant was ordered by the usaf for search and rescue operations. the sikorsky hh-53 is the usaf version of the ch-53 sea stallion helicopter. the main reason for the development of sikorsky hh-53 is to replace the hh-3 which is also called the jolly green giant. later on the sikorsky hh-53 was upgraded to mh-53. a lot of sikorsky hh-53 variants were produced such as the hh-53b which has a retractable in-flight refueling probe on the right side of the nose the hh-53c which was an interim type that dispenses with the fuel tank bracing struts the mh-53h which retained the in-flight refueling probe external fuel tanks rescue hoist and three gun armament the mh-53j which is the largest and most powerful sikorsky hh-53 variant produced by the us air force and the mh-53m has been modified with the interactive defensive avionics system. on march 15 1967 the sikorsky hh-53 super jolly green giant made its first flight at wright patterson air force base ohio. the sikorsky hh-53 was faster and had tripled the take off of the hh-3. other than that the sikorsky hh-53 was larger more heavily armed and with almost double the shaft horsepower. thus the sikorsky hh-53 had better overall performance and hover capability.
the boeing e-8c joint surveillance target attack radar system (joint stars) is a united states air force (usaf) airborne battle management and command and control asset. its primary role is to provide dedicated support of ground and air theater commanders. the e-8c can respond quickly and effectively to support worldwide military contingency operations capable of evaluating enemy situation by conducting ground surveillance. it is a jam-resistant system able to operate despite experiencing heavy electronic countermeasures. the aircraft can stay airborne for 9 hours without refueling. the e-8c was derived from the boeing 707-300 series commercial airframe. it was modified with radar communications operations and control subsystems required to perform its mission. the radar and computer subsystems on the e-8c can gather and display broad and detailed battlefield information. data including position and tracking information on enemy and friendly ground forces is collected as events occur. the information is then relayed in near-real time to the us army s common ground stations. this information is vital in air-to-ground operations and allows air and land commanders to gain and maintain control of the battlespace and execute against enemy forces. as a battle management and command and control platform the e-8c can support a wide range of roles and missions from peacekeeping operations to major theater war.
the boeing 737 is a short to medium range single aisle narrow body jet airliner. with over 7 000 ordered and over 5 000 delivered it is the most ordered and produced commercial passenger jet of all time. born out of boeing s need to introduce a competitor in the short-range small capacity jetliner market it has been continuously manufactured since 1967. it is now so widely used that at any given time there are over 1 250 airborne worldwide. on average a 737 takes off or lands every five seconds somewhere around the world. boeing was far behind its competitors when the 737 was launched as rival aircraft were already into flight certification. to speed up the development time boeing reused 60 percent of the structure and systems of the existing 707 most notably the fuselage cross section. the 737-800 was a stretched version of the 737-700. it filled the gap left by boeing s discontinuation of the mcdonnell douglas md-80 and md-90 after the two company s merger. major united states airline delta air lines has an all-boeing fleet. it was one of the last major airlines to operate the original boeing 737-200 models until the last aircraft retired in 2006. its many boeing 727s were completely replaced with boeing 737-800s in 2003. delta s boeing 737-800 airplanes have an empty area in the rear cabin where seats are normally located. not placing seats in this area results in a reduction of capacity to 150 seats reducing the number of federal aviation administration mandated flight attendants to three as one flight attendant is required for every fifty passenger seats. this seat reduction was done after 9/11 to reduce costs however delta has backtracked on this decision and will increase the capacity of the 737-800 fleet to 160 passengers by using slimline seats.

the f-35b a variant of the f-35 lightning ii is the short takeoff and vertical landing (stovl) aircraft. this takeoff and landing operation succeeds through a very innovative technology known as the shaft-driven lift fan propulsion system. besides the propulsion system the stovl variant differs only slightly from the us air force variant. the short takeoff/vertical landing (stovl) f-35b will replace the aging av-8b harrier stovl attack jets (which have also proven increasingly difficult to support) of the us marine corps as well as its f/a-18s. the f-35b will have a stealthy belly-mounted 25 mm missionized gun pod and a combat radius of more than 450 nm- nearly two times that of legacy stovl strike fighters. a shaft-driven lift fan in combination with a vectoring rear exhaust nozzle gives this fighter the ability to take off in short distances accelerate to supersonic speeds in level flight and land vertically. thanks to the lift-fan system the f-35b s total vertical lifting thrust is about 39 700 pounds (the aircraft weighs about 30 000 pounds)- more than 14 000 pounds greater than the engine alone would produce without the lift fan. the f-35b will be the world s first operational supersonic stovl aircraft. the f-35b is similar in size to the air force f-35a trading fuel volume for vertical flight systems. like the av-8 harrier ii guns will be carried in a ventral pod. vertical flight is by far the riskiest and in the end a decisive factor in design.
the brainchild of charles h. zimmerman the f5u was intended to perform well as a fighter plane while being able to remain in flight at extremely low airspeed making it easier to operate from carriers. the f5u`s unusual appearance owed to a very low aspect ratio wing without a fuselage which resulted in something looking like a flying saucer. this shape combined with powerful engines driving large propellers could plow through the air at low speed (40 mph!) since the whole airframe is immersed in the prop wash. the xf5u flying pancake was manufactured by vought. it was a fighter aircraft and the brainchild of charles zimmerman during world war ii. its maiden flight was on the 23rd of november 1942 and its production was cancelled on the 17th of march 1947. the xf5u was the most unusual aircraft designed for the u. s. navy. it consists of a flat somewhat disk-shaped body with a very low aspect ratio wing without fuselage that looks like a flying saucer. the xf5u has two 1 600hp pratt and whitney r-2000 radial engines. its configuration was designed to have a low aspect ratio aircraft that will have a low takeoff and landing speed and high top speed. it can accommodate only one the pilot; it has a length of 28 ft 7 in; wingspan of 32 ft 6 in; height of 14 ft 9 in; empty weight of 13 107 lb loaded weight of 16 722 lb. and max takeoff weight of 18 772 lb. it has a maximum speed of 425 mph; range of 1 064 miles; rate of climb 718 ft per minute; and service ceiling of 34 492 ft. it has 6 x .50 machine guns or 4 x 20 mm machine guns or 2 x 1000 lb bombs. charles lindbergh has successfully flown the first flight of the v-173 and he was surprised that it was easy to handle. the aircrafts main problem was its gearbox which produces unacceptable amounts of vibration. even the design was really promising. the u.s. navy came to a point where they had to switch from propeller driven planes to jet propelled planes.
the us airways owned by us airways group inc. is the sixth largest airline in the united states. the us airways has a fleet of 357 twinjets mostly newer airbus aircraft and other older boeing aircraft. the us airways operates 358 aircrafts. the 767-200 was the first model of the 767 and was launched in 1978. the 767-200 entered service with the united airlines in 1982. the 767-200 model is used mainly for continental routes such as new york to los angeles. the 767-200 incorporates 181 seats in a 3-class layout or 224 in a 2-class layout. due to exit-door limitations all -200 variants have a limited capacity of 255. the 767-200er extended-range variant was first delivered to el al in 1984 and it became the first 767 to complete a nonstop transatlantic journey. the 76-200er broke the flying distance record for twinjet airliners several times. as of december 2006 there are 249 orders for -200/200er; 128 are for the -200 and 121 for the -200er. as of june 17 2007 the us airways fleet consists of 13 aircrafts including the boeing 767-200er.
the boeing 747 is a long-haul widebody commercial airliner. sometimes called the jumbo jet it is known for its impressive size and is one of the world`s most recognizable aircraft. it has held the passenger capacity record for 37 years and was the first commercial wide-body aicraft. it uses a double decker configuration for part of its length and the hump created by the upper deck has made the plane a highly recognizable icon of air travel. the 747 was expected to become obsolete after sales of 400 units but it has outlived many of its critics expectations. as of june 2007 1 387 planes had been built with 120 more on order. throughout its history the national aeronautics and space administration or nasa has used several different types of aircraft on a permanent semi-permanent or short-term basis. the agency has three 747s: a 747-100 a 747-100sr and a 747sp. the 747-100 and 747-100sr are currently used as shuttle carrier aircraft (sca) while the 747sp is in use as stratospheric observatory for infrared astronomy (sofia). the scas are used to ferry space shuttles from landing sites back to the launch complex at the nasa shuttle landing facility at the kennedy space center and to and from other locations too distant for the orbiters to be delivered by ground transport. the 747-100 was was acquired from american airlines in 1974 and was extensively modified in 1976. its cabin was stripped mounting struts were added the fuselage was strengthened and vertical stabilizers were added to the tail. the avionics and engines were also upgraded. in 1988 in the wake of the challenger accident nasa procured the 747-100sr from japan airlines on recommendation from the review board. it entered service with nasa in 1990 after similar modifications. it was the first used to ferry the new shuttle endeavour in 1991.

the dc-10-30 was the most common model variant of the dc-10. it was the second long-range model after the -40 and was very popular with european flag carriers. the dc-10-30 was produced from 1972 to 1988 and was delivered to 38 different customers including lufthansa swissair varig klm and iberia were among the largest customers. its maiden flight was august 29 1970. the intercontinental range dc-10-30 introduced more powerful engines additional fuel tanks and a third main undercarriage unit. the dc-10-30 incorporates three 218kn cf6-50as 226.9kn cf6-50cs or 233.5kn cf6-50c1s or c2s or 240.2kn cf6-50c2bs. the dc-10-30 has a maximum cruising speed of 982 km/h and a range of 7 505 km with max payload. the primary users of the dc-10-30 are fedex omni air international arrow air and gemini air cargo. birman bangaladesh airlines operates five dc-10-30s as one of their primary passenger aircraft.
the supersonic long-range all-weather f-4 phantom ii was designed for the united states navy (usn) by mcdonnell douglas. it first entered service in 1960. during the vietnam war it was the primary air superiority fighter and a workhorse fighter-bomber for the us air force (usaf) navy and marine corps. by 1963 it had been adopted by the usaf for the fighter-bomber role. when production ended in 1981 a total of 5 195 f-4s had been built making it the most numerous american supersonic military aircraft. in 2000 over 1 000 units were in service with 11 nations worldwide. innovations in the f-4 included an advanced pulse-doppler radar and extensive use of titanium in the airframe. it could carry up to 8 480 kg of weapons such as air-to-air and air-to-ground missiles as well as unguided guided and nuclear bombs. the f-4e is the leading phantom model with 1 389 planes built. it took its maiden flight on june 30 1967. the f-4e had an additional fuselage fuel tank leading-edge slats for increased maneuverability an improved engine and an internally mounted 20 mm multibarrel gun with an improved fire-control system. the slats weapons and radar controls were optimized for dogfighting thus improving the aircraft s air-to-air capabilities. in air combat the f-4 s greatest advantage was its thrust which permitted a skilled pilot to engage and disengage from the fight at will. due to its distinctive appearance and its widespread service with various militaries the f-4 is one of the best known icons of the cold war. it performed well in the vietnam war and arab-israeli conflicts with f-4 crews achieving 393 aerial victories and completing countless ground attack sorties. the phantom ii has the distinction of being the last us fighter to attain ace status in the 20th century. it has also set 16 world records and was the only aircraft used by both the usaf thunderbirds and the usn blue angels.
the dc-8 is a medium to long range airliner manufactured by mcdonnell douglas between 1959 and 1972. it first flew on may 30 1958 in front of over 95 000 employees and spectators and flew for 2 hours and 7 minutes on the initial flight. the next test flight occurred on june 4 1958 and between june and late august ship one accumulated 72 hours of in-flight testing in a total of 22 flights. after a decade the dc-8 established commercial transport world records for speed altitude distance and payload. as fuel efficiency and noise concerns became more important during the 1970s many of these later models were equipped with new advanced turbofan engines and re-designated as the super 71 super 72 and super 73 respectively. the dc-8-71 version is similar to the boeing 707 in performance and payload. the 71 model made its first flight in april 1982. while the dc-8-73 version was used in secret missions by the cia s "air america" program until it was disbanded in 1975. the plane s look is kept simple to resemble cargo aircraft so as not to arouse suspicion. the dc-8-73 version of the dc-8 made its first flight on march 4 1982. united air lines was considered the largest supporter and customer for the dc-8 from the very beginning with their order of the dc-8-11 to the end with the conversion of their fleet of dc-8-61s into dc-8-71s. today however nearly all of the dc-8 seventy aircraft have been converted into freighters and united parcel service now has the largest fleet dc-8s with a total of 49 dc-8-71s & dc-8-73s.
the r3c-2 is a racing aircraft built in land and seaplane form manufactured by curtiss aeroplane and motor company for the schneider trophy race. the r3c was introduced in 1925. james doolittle won the trophy with a curtiss r3c-2 but the other two curtiss r3c-2s piloted by george cuddihy and ralph oftsie did not reach the finish line. the next day doolittle set a new world record. the primary user of the r3c is the united states army. the r3c-2 incorporates a curtiss v-1400 619 hp. the r3c-2 has a crew of 1 and has a maximum speed of 248 mph.
the fairchild pt-19 was a monoplane trainer aircraft that served with the united states army air forces (usaaf) british royal air force and royal canadian air force during world war ii. it was used by the usaaf during the primary flying training phase as the introductory pre-solo trainer for new pilots before passing them on to the more agile kaydet biplane. prior to world war ii basic flight training in the united states was generally provided in light biplanes such as the kaydet which tended to be slow stable and tolerant of fledgling pilots. however given the increasingly high performance nature of the world s combat aircraft the usaaf reasoned that the primary training was too easy giving the student a false sense of mastery that could slow down his learning or even cause him to fail. experienced instructors wanted the primary trainer to be a monoplane with higher wing loading that required more careful flying. after its first flight in may 1939 the fairchild m-62 two-seat monoplane won a fly-off competition later that year against 17 other designs for the new army training airplane. with a wing loading factor about 43 percent higher than the kaydet the m-62 had a higher stalling speed and required more care at low speeds making it exactly what the army was looking for. it was a trainer that was more similar to the fighter aircraft the trainees would eventually fly. on september 22 1939 the usaaf ordered 270 of the craft with two open cockpits as the pt-19 cornell. compared to the earlier biplane trainers the pt-19 provided a more advanced type of aircraft. speeds were higher and its flight characteristics demanded more precision and care. it was inexpensive and simple to maintain. it was one of a handful of primary trainer designs that were the first stop on a cadet s way to becoming a combat pilot. thousands of the pt-19 series were rapidly integrated into the us and commonwealth training programs serving throughout world war ii and beyond. even after their retirement in the late 1940s a substantial number found their way into civilian hands. approximately 100 pt-19s are still flyable today.
saturn v (saturn 5) americas moon rocket is still the largest and most powerful u.s. expendable launch vehicle ever constructed. the moon rocket was designed under the direction of wernher von braun at the marshall space flight center in huntsville alabama with boeing north american aviation douglas aircraft company and ibm as the lead contractors. the saturn 5 was used for nasas late 1960`s / early 1970`s apollo moon program and for the launching skylab space station in the 1970 s. all saturn v missions launched from launch complex 39 at the john f. kennedy space center. after the rocket cleared the launch tower mission control transferred to the johnson space center in houston texas. officials from the department of the interior referred to the saturn v as "a unique engineering masterpiece that formed the key link in the chain that enabled americans to travel to the moon. the success of the saturn v made possible the success of the american space program." the saturn v at the united states space and rocket center was delivered by marshall in 1969 after all three stages were taken from the centers dynamic test stand.
the super elite p-40b warhawk was one of the planes used by an american volunteer group known as the gflying tigersg. the group consisted of united states army forces united states navy and unites states marine corps. under a secret presidential sanction the pilots of the said group were recruited by claire chennault. they formed a fighter group with three squadrons that were trained in china. the said group defended burma supply line to china. this happened before the american entered world war ii to fight against japan. the p-40b warhawk was managed and obtain by chennault as it was in production for british and americans. the major difference between the p-40b warhawk and tomahawk giib is the p-40b had an exterior fuel tank membrane while the tomahawk had an interior membrane which is more effective for fuel tanks leaks. the p-40b was purchased without gun sights radios and wing guns. as a result there was a continual difficulty for the avg in burma and china. on the other hand the good qualities of the warhawk included the pilot armor self sealing fuel tanks sturdy construction heavy armament and a diving speed thatgs faster than most japanese planes. in the year 1941 one hundred p40b aircrafts were sent to burma on third country freighters packed in crates. at ragoon the warhawk was assembled and test flown by a personnel of the central aircraft manufacturing company before they delivered it to the avg training unit. the p-40b was the first fighter flown in action against the japanese forces in burma on march 13 1941 before the us entered world war ii. the warhawk also played a vital role in the middle stages of world war ii.

the boeing 737 next generation is the name given to the -600/-700/-800/-900/business jet series of the boeing 737 after the introduction of the -300/-400/-500 classic series. they are american short to medium range single aisle narrow body jet airliners. produced since 1996 over 2 500 aircraft have been delivered as of 2008. the 737-700 was the first of next generation series when launch customer southwest airlines ordered the variant in november 1993. the variant was based on the 737-300 and entered service in 1998. it replaced the 737-300 in boeing s lineup and its direct competitor is the a319. it typically seats 132 passengers in a two class cabin or 149 in all economy configuration.
on april 18 1942 jimmy doolittle and 15 gallant crews took off from the deck of the uss hornet for an historic flight to bomb tokyo. the planes were parked on the hornet s flight deck in the order they were to leave. there was no room to rearrange them and their long non-folding wings made it impossible to send them below. the leading bomber piloted by lieutenant colonel doolittle had but a few hundred feet of deck run to reach flying speed but every subsequent one had a little more. the b-25 bomber was named as a tribute to the crusading colonel billy mitchell for his visionary ideas on air power. on april 18 1942 jimmy doolittle flown the b25 and led a group of 16 b-25 bombers from the deck of the uss hornet for an historic flight to bomb tokyo japan. the bombing was one of the most audacious missions of world war ii. the plan for this confidential mission started several months before and jimmy doolittle was the one chosen to lead organize and plan the raid. the plan was to get within 300 or 400 miles of japan bomb military and industrialized targets in tokyo osaka and kobe soon after dusk and then fly on to a dawn landing at hidden airfields on the coast of china. the twin engine b25 mitchell bomber was selected by doolittle for the mission indicated that it should be possible to establish these aircraft from a carrier deck with less than 500 feet of runway.
pitts thought of everything when it designed the pitts special a single seat aerobatic biplane. for example it comes equipped with a clear plexiglas floor in the cockpit for improved vision when flying upside down.
the b-52h stratofortress manufactured by boeing is a strategic bomber capable of supporting large-scale global missions in a nuclear or a conventional role. the b-52h plays an important role in these specialized missions until 2035. it had its first flight in april 1952. the b-52h stratofortress entered service in 1961 and 104 were built. the last was delivered in 1962; however its service life is expected to continue beyond the year 2030 due to extensive system and structural upgrades. the b-52h a b-52 variant is a very large aircraft with a length of 159ft 4in and a take-off weight of 488 000lb. the all-metal skin bears a high proportion of the flight loading. when on the ground the surface of the aircraft on the forward section of the fuselage has a wrinkled appearance. the skin expands and becomes smooth as the crew compartment is pressurised when the aircraft gains altitude. later on in the decade the b-52h was fitted to carry the new "joint direct attack munition (jdam)" and "joint stand-off weapon (jsow)" guided glide bombs. these weapons use the "global positioning system (gps)" satellite constellation to zero in on target coordinates. use of the jdam and other gps weapons was enabled by yet another buff avionics upgrade the "conventional enhancement modification (cem)" program which was begun in 1994.
the boeing 727 is a mid-size narrow-body three-engine t-tailed commercial jet airliner. the 727 s fuselage has an outer diameter of 148 inches (3.8 m). this allows six-abreast seating (three per side) and a single central access walkway when coach-class (18 inch width) seats are installed. the first boeing 727 flew in 1963 and for over a decade it was the most produced commercial jet airliner in the world. a total of 1 831 727s were delivered. the 727 s sales record for the most jet airliners ever sold was broken in the early 1990s by its younger stablemate the boeing 737. in august 2008 there were a total of 81 boeing 727-100 aircraft and 419 727-200 aircraft in airline service.
the messerschmitt me 262 schwalbe was the first turbojet fighter aircraft to enter operational service. it was produced during world war ii and began its action in 1944 as a bomber and fighter aircraft. it was formally named schwalbe because of the bird "swallow" one of the fastest birds ever known. german pilots called it the "turbo " while the allies called it the "stormbird". even though the messerschmitt me 262 only had a minimal influence on the class of the warfare; its design had a powerful impact on postwar aircraft development. the messerschmitt me 262 was often used as an ultimate super weapon; the me 262 was already being built as project p.1065 before the beginning of world war ii. ideas were first planned in april 1939 and the aircraft s original design was too much alike to the plane that entered the service. a total of 1400 messerschmitt me 262 aircrafts were produced but the amount of operating aircraft was normally below 100 mostly due to lack of fuel. the best scorer with the me-262 was franz schall with 17 kills which included six four-engine bombers and ten p-51 fighters. another candidate for top scorer on the aircraft was heinrich bar who defeated 16 enemy aircrafts while flying the me 262.
